Andel, the UK’s leading developer of specialised leak detection, water sustainability and environmental protection systems is celebrating winning the Sustainability Award at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards 2023 held on Friday 3 November. The award recognises the huge commitment Andel has made in reducing its environmental impact in its journey to net zero.
Andel took the bold decision in 2020 to become Net Zero by 2025. In June 2022 Andel took on a Net Zero and Sustainability Coordinator, Joe Harris, to facilitate and oversee the initiatives required to meet the target.
Matt Travis, Vice President of the Chamber who presented the award said, “...the winner had a fantastic commitment to sustainability, not only within their business, within the products in their business, but also within the community and as a smaller size business being able to take that and put it into their products – and that's why today Andel is the winner of the chamber Sustainability Award.”
Carrie Sudbury, Chief Executive of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, commented after the win: “I want to Congratulate Andel on winning our Sustainability Award, I cannot tell you how proud we are to have such an organisation as Andel in our region”.
Since committing to Net Zero by 2025, Andel has implemented numerous changes to the business such as its pledge to the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission, receiving ‘achiever’ category due to the efforts and strategies that have been put in place.
In Spring 2023 Andel created a Wildflower Meadow at its head office on the busy A628. The Meadow is a testament to how making small changes can have far reaching impacts at numerous levels. The meadow has reduced ongoing ground maintenance costs, improved biodiversity, provided a wildlife habitat, brightened up an industrial estate, sequestered carbon in the soil and given staff the opportunity to engage in a rewarding environmental project.
Andel has replaced its fleet of vehicles with electric cars, installing EV chargers at head office for all staff, reduced its fossil fuel fleet by 80% with plans to de carbonise the remaining fleet and reduce its size, reducing its carbon footprint even further. In 2021 Andel moved head office to Dodworth Business Park to premises with a much higher EPC rating and has switched utility provider to a renewable energy provider for both electricity and gas, saving 80,00KWh of fossil fuel per year. In 2022 Andel changed refuse collection to a company that could weigh the amount of waste and include recycling and food as a waste stream which has meant 99.6% of Andel’s waste has been diverted from Landfill.
Mark Harris, Andel’s Commercial Director commented, “We are absolutely delighted to have won the Sustainability Award and to be recognised for the effort and commitment everyone in the company has made. As an environmental company, we are totally committed to our Net Zero goal. Environmental factors are now habitual in all of our decision-making processes and this award is a testament to the efforts of the whole team at Andel.”
